Liverpool's opponents in the 1983-84 European Cup quarter-finals were Portuguese champions Benfica. Liverpool won the first leg in England 1–0 and the second leg at the Estádio da Luz in Portugal resulted in a 4–1 victory for Liverpool. Liverpool went on to beat Dinamo Bucuresti in the semi-finals, and on 30 May 1984 Alan Kennedy was Liverpool's unlikely hero as Joe Fagan's men defied the odds to claim a fourth European Cup crown and see off AS Roma in their own backyard.

The Benfica '84 Sweater is a long sleeved, round neck sweater featuring a hand print design inspired by Steven Gerrard’s celebration. The celebration represented Liverpool FC’s five European Cup victories.
